Practical Motorcycle Test

The practical motorcycle test has some similarities to the practical driving test for cars but there are certain elements of it that are very different. In this article we look at the practical motorcycle test.

The Practical Motorcycle Test

The first and most obvious difference between the two tests is that with the motorcycle practical the examiner cannot actually be present on the vehicle with the learner so he or she must ride in front on their own motorcycle. With this in mind the learner driver will be fitted with a radio and an earpiece so that they can receive instructions clearly from their examiner on what to do and what directions to take.

You must ensure that before you take your test you have all the necessary protective clothing and headgear required by law. The only exemptions to this rule are for individuals of the Sikh community who must wear a turban. You should be aware that examiners cannot and do not provide protective clothing or headgear and therefore if you turn up for the test ill equipped you will not be allowed to take it.

It is important that you bring proof of your Theory and Hazard Perception Test passes along with your provisional driver's licence on the day of the test. If you fail to bring any of the required paperwork then you will not be allowed to take the test thus forfeiting your test fee and requiring you to make another booking at further cost to you.

During the course of the test you will be asked to perform the emergency stop exercise - which will give the examiner an indication as to your reflexes and also your ability to spot any oncoming hazards.

In addition you will be asked to perform a U-turn which involves riding the motorcycle back across the road and turning to face the opposite direction. This is the same principle as the turn in the road for car driver's.

A slow ride exercise is carried out in order for the examiner to ascertain your ability to control the vehicle you are in charge of. This is one of the most important areas of the test and attention to detail and also a good knowledge of the vehicle you are riding is a must.

Checking Your Vehicle

Your examiner will also ask you - either before or after the test proper - to answer some questions as to how to check tyre pressure, oil levels etc on your vehicle. This is designed to prove that you have not only road awareness but an awareness of the problems which may occur in the maintenance aspect of your vehicle. You should study hard for all aspects of the practical but pay a considerable amount of attention as to how to maintain your vehicle as questions are now being asked about this aspect of vehicle ownership in all tests now.

Changes to the Practical Motorcycle Test

You should be aware that from October 2008 the practical motorcycle test is changing to coincide with changes in legislation laid down by the European Union. These changes will include negotiating your vehicle through a coned area (known as a garage), further breaking exercises and negotiating your vehicle in a figure of eight and slalom formation.

If you require further information on the practical motorcycle test as it now stands or how it will be performed from October 2008 visit the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) website at www.dsa.gov.uk.
